*argh* ICK! Bazillions! *ewie* Tiny Creepy Bugs! AKA - What color NOT to paint your country home....

Bleck! UGH! Literally - no I mean really! - bazillions! All over my garage door, the wall - the ground was moving *gasp* Little, tiny, creepy bugs!

Okay - so if all you see is one, it doesn't have the same effect. Right, I know how tiny they were. *rolls eyes* okay, I know - they are aphids. But, hey - if you were standing in a swarming pile of little tiny bugs, wouldn't you be a little - well, um... okay - well, maybe not... But, you know - they might have teeth! well... maybe...
They could be Mothra's cousin... maybe...

Hey, look - I did go all the way inside the house and grab my camera! And! I came back outside... Of course, you will note that there is not a picture depicting the bazillions of bugs that were trying to crawl on my shoes and up my socks... Nor the bazillions that were on the wall and the other bazillion that were on the garage door. Yeah, that's right - they were too tiny to show up in the big picture. I know, I know - there is no limit to what a wuss I can be! But would you like it if a bazillion tiny little bugs that might have teeth were aimed at your socks???

So what did I learn from all of this? Well, this is not the first time I have had swarms of insects land on my house. Do you know how many kinds of blister beetles there are? I do. I know all of the sizes and all of the colors. I have had the blisters to prove it. How are you on grasshopper recognition? Yep, I had them from the tiny brown ones to the big green ones that you could put a leash on and fly around the block.

I repeat, what did I learn? Here is my sage advice that I give to you FREE of charge. If you are living in the country, do not paint your house a lovely soft green color. Nope. Don't do it! You will look like a giant leaf and you will put out the welcome mat to every leaf eating varmint out there. *rolls eyes* Believe me.

Don't do it!

*runs inside, throws clothes in washer, races to shower*

*whew*
*fans self* okay, I'm fine now. They are all outside... ah... at least I think they are....

*shivers*

'night all!
Blessings,
Kathy

Beautiful Flower Treasure Hunt - Search diligently...

and thou shalt find, Kathleen.

My mom said that to me a lot - and she used the King's James English when she said it, too! There is a lot of truth in those words, though.

Remember this lovely flower?

Well, in case you missed my tales about it, check out this post!

Russ and his wife, Denise, were hiking and he photographed the same flower within days of when I took my photograph. (Check out Russell's artwork here - he is really talented!) We both wanted to know what this flower was, so we searched and searched... And at last, we found the answer. Russ located the name *drum roll please!!!*

ARGEMONE PLEIACANTHA or Pricklypoppy or Prickly Poppy

Well, it definitely lives up to it's name! I found out that it is also a very interesting plant.
  • The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service had quite a bit to say about it. There is some general information here.
  • Take a look at its HUGE seeds here. With those seeds, I am surprised that it doesn't grow to twice its size!
  • There is also conservation information, growth habbits, size, etc., about this plant here. I was surprised to find out that this plant has a root that is 16 inches (40 cm) deep! It is also on the endagered list *sigh*
And, I was delighted to find out that it is not toxic! Of course, since I tried to cut one and paint it last year, I sort of had that one figured out... unless it takes a long time... ah... *shakes head *laughs* and refuses to think about that!*

Anyway, I thought you all would like to know what this beautiful flower is called and to find out how interesting it really is.

If your are following our Blog to Blog Beautiful Flower Treasure Hunt (which you should do because it is not only fun, but it is - well - beautiful!) then your next stop is Allie's blog =)

Beautiful Flower Treasure Hunt - Lovely Yellow Flowers!

Hope you are having fun on our Blog to Blog Beautiful Flower Treasure Hunt! Remember that each time you post a comment, you will be entered into the drawing for a FREE ACEO! How cool is that???

Here are some fun flowers from me. This time they are ACEOs that are listed in my etsy shop =)

This one is a digitally altered photograph that I took of a lovely yellow rose that was in a bouquet that my cousin, Debbie got when we came to visit her. I love roses!

This one was part of the ACEO Bounty Challenge and it answered the challenge to draw something upside down with your "wrong" hand. I am a 'righty', so this was drawn upside down with my left hand. It was fun to do!

I love sunflowers! They are one of my favorite flowers =) This is an original watercolor painting of a lovely sunflower - hope it brings some sunshine to your day!

Beautiful Flower Treasure Hunt - What in the world is this????

Isn't this flower gorgeous! It's really big, too - probably almost 4 inches in diameter (about 10 cm). I have no idea what it is called, but I do know a few things about it...

If you want to take this flower home to do a painting of it, it is nearly impossible. First, it has a stalk - not a stem. No, make that a tree. Bring a saw, not a pocket knife! And then - watch out for those stickers. No - watch out for the spikes! Those babies are HUGE and sharp.
If you do manage to get that flower separated from the plant, watch out for the nasty, sticky yellow sap that is probably toxic. (Oh, great *rolls eyes*). The last thing you will have to do is run home fast enough to make time go backwards (you know - create a time warp!) because this flower wilts as soon as it is severed from its stem (ah - trunk!).
So, now you know why I took photographs of it... from a distance. Oh, yeah. I forgot to let you know - it smells bad, too. Bad!
But it is REALLY pretty, don't you think?
Okay - I am sure that Allie has something sweet for you at her blog, which is your next stop along the Flower Treasure Hunt!

Happy Father's Day!

My father loved to garden. Wherever we lived there were flowers, trees, and bushes in an amazing array of colors, shapes and sizes. One of his favorite flowers was this purple iris.

I remember helping him to plant them at our home in Phoenix, Arizona (USA) in the 1950s. I am not sure if he had brought some of the bulbs from a previous home or not.
When I moved into a home in Phoenix, Dad gave me some iris bulbs. Dad also gave my sister, Mary, some iris for her new garden, too. When Mom and Dad retired to Chino Valley, Dad brought some of the iris. When I moved to Chino Valley, Dad gave me some iris for my garden.
Sadly, Dad passed away in 1993 after a brief battle with cancer. It was a long, sad winter. When the warm spring weather arrive, I had a delightful surprise. Roses, piracantha, gladiolas, jasmine - and iris! All of Dad's flowers bloomed! It was so refreshing after the long winter to see the beautiful colors in his gardens.
When I moved from Chino Valley to Paulden, I took some iris with me. I love the sweet musky fragrance and the deep purple color. Whenever I see them, I step back to the 1950s and I think about helping Dad plant the iris in our new flower bed.
Happy Father's Day!
God bless,
Kathy
PS Stop back tomorrow and join the fun in our Beautiful Flower Treasure Hunt and you can see even more gorgeous flowers and have a chance to win a free ACEO! Details will be posted tomorrow!

Lost my marbles? Nope! I found them.

I admit it! I love games and toys. I have a whole lot of really cool vintage marbles so I decided that it would be fun to paint some of them. Here is a little ACEO original watercolor painting that I did with three of my marbles. It was fun to do - but challenging as I was painting the reflections on the glass marbles.

How about you? Care to take on a challenging art project? If you do, let me know. I would love to see how you did on your own challenging project!

Happy painting!
Blessings,
Kathy

Back Yard Bird Treasure Hunt

Imagine my surprise when I was in my yard and I looked back towards the house and saw a ? what? a turkey? How did a turkey get in my yard???? Not that it is impossible for that to happen where I live! However... I had not seen a turkey...

I saw Penne - our pea hen! I knew that peacocks fanned their tails, but I had no idea that the pen hens did also. Here is a picture of Penne (on the far left) with part of our guinea fowl flock - but that is another story for another post!

Hope you are having fun on our Back Yard Bird Treasure Hunt! The next person you will visit is Allie =)

Back Yard Bird Treasure Hunt

I love guinea fowl - they are so fun! This year my neighbor, Lorie, and I decided that we would get some from a hatchery, split the cost and I would take half and she would take half. The little darlings arrived in good order and we each had our little own flock growing nicely - hers in her garage, mine in my bathroom - until they could go outside.
When they were finally old enough to go outside, she kept hers in her dove pen and I housed mine in my chicken coop. Finally they were almost fully grown and it was time to let them wander around the yard.

Now, if you have never had guinea birds, you have probably never heard them call to each other. It sounds rather like 'buckwheat' - screamed at the top of your lungs! You can hear them a long way off - and they can hear each other even better. It wasn't long before her little flock and my little flock called to each other and hers came over to my yard. At the end of the day, all of my guineas were gone but only as far as her dove pen. The next morning, the combined flock was back to my yard.

Now they are fully grown and they travel over about 35 acres, calling to each other, eating bugs, and munching on weeds. At night they roost in Lorie's trees and in the morning and evening they stop by to get a little handout from me. Independent little critters and that's for sure! Yep - I love my guineas - wherever they are! LOL!

Music to my ears - noisy guinea birds! Love them!

I love my noisy guinea birds - they are so fun to watch! And they always greet me with their loud call =) probably has something to do with the grain that I am always tossing to them *winks* These birds really seem to have a sense of humor, too - they are characters who deserve to have a little series of paintings dedicated to them! Here is one of the ones I did today ~

And, yes - they really do have those spiky feathers on their necks! They are really a unique bird. Their feathers are beautiful - even the white guineas have the spots on their feathers.

So, this is what my alarm clock looks like! ROFLOL! I highly recommend it, though my daughter does not agree *winks* because she can't adjust the time the 'guinea alarm' goes off!
Okay - off to get a good night's sleep so I will be fresh and ready for the 'guinea roll call' in the morning!
God bless,
Kathy

Another work in progress!

This one is really 'rough' and needs more work before it is finished. I just love this color, though. I can get some great lights and darks with the watersoluable graphite which I really like. It is easy to soften some areas and to keep others more crisp. The pencil changes color when you add water so there is a lot of tonal variation.

Yep. I am really enjoying these pencils! When I finish the drawing I will post it =) What do you think about it so far? Let me know!

I really like those watersoluable graphite pencils! Check out this one =)

I can hardly wait to try some of the new colors that I got - woohoo! Hopefully I will have a bit of time later this week to try them out. A print of "Raven" is listed in my Etsy shop.

Enjoy!
God bless,
Kathy
